Using this action from the user interface
If you prefer building automations and scripts visually, Home Assistant walks you through this action step by step. You pick what to target, tweak a few options, and save. No YAML knowledge required.
To get to-do list items from an automation or a script:
- Go to Settings > Automations & scenes.
- Open an existing automation or script, or select Create automation > Create new automation.
- If you’re setting up a new automation, add a trigger in the When section. Scripts don’t need a trigger. They run when something else calls them.
- In the Then do section, select Add action.
- Select what you want to control. Under By target (see Targets), select the to-do list you want to read.
- From the actions shown for that target, select Get to-do list items.
- Set the Status if you only want items with a specific status.
- Select Save.

Using this action in YAML

In YAML, refer to this action as todo.get_items. Store the result in a response variable so you can use it in later steps:
action: todo.get_items
target:
entity_id: todo.vacation_preparation
data:
status: needs_action
response_variable: todo_items
This returns all items on todo.vacation_preparation that have not been completed.
