Update to-do list item
Use this action to update an existing item on a to-do list, for example to rename it, mark it as completed, or change its due date.
Using this action from the user interface
If you prefer building automations and scripts visually, Home Assistant walks you through this action step by step. You pick what to target, tweak a few options, and save. No YAML knowledge required.
To update a to-do list item from an automation or a script:
- Go to Settings > Automations & scenes.
- Open an existing automation or script, or select Create automation > Create new automation.
- If you’re setting up a new automation, add a trigger in the When section. Scripts don’t need a trigger. They run when something else calls them.
- In the Then do section, select Add action.
- Select what you want to control. Under By target (see Targets), select the to-do list with the item you want to update.
- From the actions shown for that target, select Update to-do list item.
- Set the Item name or UID of the item, and the values you want to change.
- Select Save.

This marks the item named Submit income tax return as completed on todo.personal_tasks.
