Update daily restrictions
The Update daily restrictions action updates playtime and bedtime restrictions for a specific day of the week on a specified device.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in with an administrator account. Only administrators can run this action.
- The device’s restriction mode is set to Different for each day. You can update daily restrictions only in this mode.
Calling this action overwrites the existing daily configuration for the specified day:
-
Any omitted restriction setting (
max_play_timeorbedtime_start/bedtime_end) will be disabled for that day. For example, to adjustmax_play_timewhile retaining an existing bedtime schedule, you must supply bothbedtime_startandbedtime_endin the same call. -
To disable all restrictions for a specific day, provide only the
device_idandday_of_week.
This action does not support targets. In the UI, you are not prompted to choose an area, entity, or label. Instead, you select the Nintendo Switch to update restrictions for through the Device option.
Using this action from the user interface
If you prefer building automations and scripts visually, Home Assistant walks you through this action step by step. You pick what to target, tweak a few options, and save. No YAML knowledge required.
To update daily restrictions from an automation or a script:
- Go to Settings > Automations & scenes.
- Open an existing automation or script, or select Create automation > Create new automation.
- If you’re setting up a new automation, add a trigger in the When section. Scripts don’t need a trigger. They run when something else calls them.
- In the Then do section, select Add action.
- From the search box, search for and select Nintendo Switch parental controls: Update daily restrictions.
- Choose the Device, select the Day of the week, and configure the playtime or bedtime restrictions as needed.
- Select Save.
Options in the UI
The day of the week to update restrictions for (monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, or sunday).
The maximum playtime allowed in minutes for this day (between 0 and 360). Omit to disable playtime limits for this day.
The time when bedtime restrictions start (must be between 16:00 and 23:00, or 00:00). Both bedtime start and bedtime end must be provided to enable bedtime restrictions.
Using this action in YAML
If you work directly in YAML, or you want to know exactly what Home Assistant does under the hood, this section has the technical reference. It lists the field names you use in YAML, their types, and which ones are required. For how an automation or a script is built in YAML, refer to Automations in YAML and Scripts.
In YAML, refer to this action as nintendo_parental_controls.update_daily_restrictions. A basic example looks like this:
action: nintendo_parental_controls.update_daily_restrictions

day_of_week: "friday"
max_play_time: 120
bedtime_start: "21:00:00"
bedtime_end: "07:00:00"
This updates the restrictions for Friday on the selected Nintendo Switch.

More examples
Real scenarios where this action shows up in automations and scripts. Copy any example and adapt it to your setup. In the visual editor, select the UI options listed in the example or paste the YAML code.
You don’t need to edit YAML to use these examples. Copy a YAML snippet from this page, open the visual automation editor in Home Assistant, and press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac). Home Assistant automatically converts the pasted YAML into the visual editor format, whether it’s a full automation, a single trigger, a condition, or an action.
