KACO Modbus

The KACO Modbus integrationIntegrations connect and integrate Home Assistant with your devices, services, and more. [Learn more] connects Home Assistant to a KACO new energy solar inverter, and shows what it is producing. The inverter is read directly over your local network, so no cloud account or manufacturer portal is involved.

Supported devices

KACO inverters that provide SunSpec over Modbus TCP, which covers the current three-phase range including the NX3, TL3 and NH3 families.

Prerequisites

  • The inverter needs a network connection to Home Assistant, over its Ethernet port.
  • Modbus TCP needs to be enabled on the inverter. This is a setting on the inverter itself, reachable either from its display or through its web interface, usually under the SunSpec or Modbus protocol settings.
  • The inverter accepts one Modbus connection at a time, so anything else polling it over Modbus needs to be stopped first.

Configuration

To add the KACO Modbus device to your Home Assistant instance, use this My button:

Manual configuration steps

If the above My button doesn’t work, you can also perform the following steps manually:

  • Browse to your Home Assistant instance.

  • Go to Settings > Devices & services.

  • In the bottom right corner, select the Add Integration button.

  • From the list, select KACO Modbus.

  • Follow the instructions on screen to complete the setup.

Host

The hostname or IP address of the inverter.

Port

The Modbus TCP port to connect to. KACO inverters use 502 unless this has been changed.

Modbus unit ID

The inverter’s Modbus unit ID, also called its device address. Leave this at 1 unless the inverter is reached through an RS485-to-TCP gateway, which needs the address configured on that gateway.

Supported functionality

Sensors

  • AC power: The power the inverter is currently feeding into the grid.
  • Total energy produced: The inverter’s lifetime energy counter. Add this to the Energy dashboard as a solar production source, as described in integrating your solar panels.
  • Operating state: What the inverter is currently doing, such as producing, asleep, or in a fault condition.

Data updates

The KACO Modbus integrationIntegrations connect and integrate Home Assistant with your devices, services, and more. [Learn more] pollsData polling is the process of querying a device or service at regular intervals to check for updates or retrieve data. By defining a custom polling interval, you can control how frequently your system checks for new data, which can help optimize performance and reduce unnecessary network traffic. Known limitations

Only inverters that offer Modbus TCP are supported. KACO inverters that provide only the manufacturer’s serial protocol can’t be used with this integration.

Diagnostics

The diagnostics download includes the inverter’s raw register map, which can help developers reproduce issues without access to the hardware. The serial number is redacted. Attach the downloaded file when reporting an issue. For more information, see Download diagnostics.

Removing the integration

This integration follows standard integration removal. Disabling Modbus TCP on the inverter afterwards is optional.

To remove an integration instance from Home Assistant

  1. Go to Settings > Devices & services and select the integration card.
  2. From the list of devices, select the integration instance you want to remove.
  3. Next to the entry, select the three dots menu. Then, select Delete.
