Test not equal: ne

The ne test checks whether two values are not equal. It is also available under the alias !=. When used with is, it reads naturally: value is ne(other).

While you can always use != directly in conditions, the ne test is particularly useful with selectattr, rejectattr, select, and reject. These filters require a test name as a string, and ne lets you filter out items matching a specific value without writing a loop.

Function signature

The signature is a technical summary of this template function. It shows the name of the function, the values (called parameters) it accepts, and what type of data each parameter expects (for example, a piece of text or a number).

Function parameters that have a = with a value after them are optional. If you leave them out, the default value shown is used automatically. Function parameters without a default are required.

The value to test. This is the left-hand side of the comparison.

Using with selectattr

Filter entities whose state is not a specific value. This is useful for finding entities that are in an unexpected or non-default state.

Good to know

  • Numbers and strings are not equal even when they look the same. "5" is ne(5) is true.
  • Especially useful with selectattr to skip entities in a specific state like unavailable.

Remove specific values from a list

Use reject to remove items equal to a specific value.
