Test if boolean: boolean

The boolean test checks whether a value is a boolean (true or false). It returns true if the value is of boolean type and false for any other type, including strings like true or integers like 1.

This is useful when you need to verify the type of a value before processing it. In Home Assistant, entityAn entity represents a sensor, actor, or function in Home Assistant. As a test

Function signature

The signature is a technical summary of this template function. It shows the name of the function, the values (called parameters) it accepts, and what type of data each parameter expects (for example, a piece of text or a number).

Function parameters that have a = with a value after them are optional. If you leave them out, the default value shown is used automatically. Function parameters without a default are required.

The following parameters can be provided to this test.

Good to know

  • Only the actual boolean values true and false pass this test. Strings like "true" and integers like 1 do not.
  • Entity states are always strings, so this test will never succeed on a raw states(...) result.
