The Home Assistant project is run by the Open Home Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to keeping smart home technology private, secure, and open.
A few things are paid, but always optional:
- The hardware Home Assistant runs on. Home Assistant Green is the recommended plug-and-play option, but you can also bring your own Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or virtual machine.
- Home Assistant Cloud, an optional subscription that pays for hosted services like easy remote access and integration with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Revenue from Home Assistant Cloud directly funds development of Home Assistant itself.
- Optional accessories like the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter, or the Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition for local voice control.
You never need any of these to use Home Assistant. The full software is free, forever.
